Kaori Yamagami-Cello

A recent prizewinner at the 2005 International Rostropovich Cello Competition in Paris, Canada’s Kaori Yamagami is indeed gaining attention everywhere she performs. At home, Ms. Yamagami gained national attention winning the CBC Young Performer’s Competition in 2001. Continuing her prize winnings, in 2004, she won the Ingrid zu Solms prize at the Kronberg program and was accepted into Frans Helmerson’s studio at the Musikhochschule in Berlin, Germany. This past year, at the Verbier Academy and Festival, she was awarded the highly coveted Prix de Jean Nicolas Firmenich Cello Prize.

In recent years, Kaori has performed throughout Canada on such touring networks as Prairie Debut and Debut Atlantic. For these tours, she performed throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and New Brunswick. She has also appeared at music festivals in such cities as Vancover, Montreal and Winnipeg. Highlights from the past season included Ms. Yamagami performing with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra London. She also returned to Japan where she performed on a tour that included the prestigious Suntory Hall as well as at the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo.

Born in 1982, Kaori began studying the cello at the age of 3, making her first public appearance by the age of 6 at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. At the age of 13, she was accepted and enrolled at the Curtis Institute of Music under the tutelage of Orlando Cole. Kaori completed her studies with Paul Katz at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and has since traveled to Germany where she studied with the late Boris Pergamenschikow and Hans-Christian Schweiker. She is a recipient of a Professional Career Grant from The Canada Council and in 2004, Kaori was awarded the Sylva Gelber Foundation Award. The award is given annually to the most talented Canadian candidate under the age of 30 in the Canada Council’s competition. Kaori is a recipient of the Beebe Fellowship Award.

PETER LONGWORTH, piano An acclaimed solo performer, chamber musician and teacher, Peter Longworth has performed in Canada, the United States and Europe. He has been soloist with the Chicago Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic and other Canadian orchestras. He has appeared at the Caramoor Music Festival (New York), was artist-in-residence and featured soloist at the Icicle Creek Music Festival (Washington), and plays annually at the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival. He is a founding member of the Duke Trio that has performed in New York, Chicago and throughout Canada. He is heard often on CBC and his recordings include a collaboration with cellist Amanda Forsyth and a forthcoming Duke Trio recording of Shostakovich and Copland. He teaches at the Glenn Gould School of Toronto’s Royal Conservatory of Music, maintains a private studio, and is in demand as chamber coach and adjudicator at competitions and festivals. He began his piano studies in Brussels and completed his studies at the Royal Conservatory with Marek Jablonski, Leon Fleisher and Marc Durand.
