BCI Barbershop Quartet- "Here Comes Treble"
-under the direction of Shawn Oakes

Harmony Squared

The BCI Barbershop chorus started two years ago after it was learned that there was an amazing opportunity for young male singers – an opportunity to go to Tampa Florida to sing in the midwinter international youth convention. The only requirement was to learn three songs (no experience needed). That year two students along with director Shawn Oakes participated with the Cross Canada Chorus (a group of young men ages 13-29) and had a fantastic experience. Costs were covered by The Barbershop Harmony Society, Sing Canada Harmony, individuals and barbershop chapters.
Since then the Chorus at Brantford Collegiate has grown to about 20 singers, including a quartet of boys that won the high school quartet competition in Ottawa. The Southern Ontario Youth Acapella Chorus (SOYA) was formed so that even more could enjoy the joy of singing. That chorus includes boys from other schools in our surrounding area.
Fourteen members from BCI went to the Midwinter Youth Convention in Las Vegas in January, 2011 and recently the chorus competed in Tucson, Arizona, capturing gold. The students have had opportunities to sing at wonderful venues throughout Ontario and beyond, a quartet has attended Harmony University on full scholarship, they have had training by international choral clinicians and have hosted workshops. All in a few years!!
The key to the program’s success was to let the young men see other young men singing - to talk to others and share experiences. If anyone knows any young men who want to get involved please contact director Shawn Oakes. No experience needed! Let's support vocal music in our schools and encourage boys to sing. Let them know of the wonderful opportunities available and the fraternal benefits associated with it. Keep the whole world singing!
